The Web Viewer for PowerPoint Is Gone. What Works in 2026.
In December 2024, Microsoft retired the Web Viewer add-in for PowerPoint (retirement notice MC921112). It gave 30 days’ warning and named no replacement. If your slides relied on Web Viewer, they broke. If you are looking for something that still works, here is an honest overview.
What happened to Web Viewer
Web Viewer was a Microsoft-built Office add-in that displayed a live webpage inside a PowerPoint slide during presentation. It worked on Windows and Mac desktop PowerPoint, and in PowerPoint for the web.
As of December 2024, it is gone. Microsoft removed it from the Office Add-in store. Existing installs no longer function. The support page for Web Viewer now redirects to a general add-ins help article with no mention of a successor.
What about LiveWeb?
LiveWeb is a third-party VBA macro add-in that predates Web Viewer. It surfaces frequently in search results and on Microsoft’s own forum threads, which is how people end up trying it.
It does not work reliably in modern PowerPoint. The reasons:
- Windows only. LiveWeb is a VBA macro. It does not run on Mac.
- Not supported in PowerPoint for the web. VBA macros do not run in the browser-based version.
- Blocked by most managed Microsoft 365 tenants. Corporate IT environments commonly restrict unsigned or unverified macros. LiveWeb falls into that category.
- Unmaintained. The project has not had a meaningful update in years. Multiple reports on Microsoft’s own support forums confirm it no longer functions in current PowerPoint builds.
If you are in a standard Windows environment with an older PowerPoint version, you may get LiveWeb to load. In most 2024-and-newer setups, you will not.

Screenshot + hyperlink is the fallback that always works. Take a screenshot of the page, insert it as an image, add a hyperlink to the live URL. Your audience can click through in presentation mode. It is not live or interactive inside the slide, but it is reliable on every platform.
SparkEmbed is a PowerPoint add-in available in the Microsoft Office Store. It displays a live, interactive webpage directly on the slide, including hover states, filters, and scrolling. It works on Windows and Mac desktop PowerPoint. It does not work in PowerPoint for the web. If your organization has restricted the Office Store, your IT team would need to approve it.
One problem no tool can fix
Some websites will not load inside any PowerPoint add-in, regardless of which one you use. This is not a bug in the add-in. It is a server-level security setting called X-Frame-Options or Content-Security-Policy, which tells browsers not to display the page inside an embedded frame.
Common sites that block embedding: Google products (Docs, Sheets, most google.com pages), most banking and financial platforms, and some government sites.
Sites that typically allow embedding: Tableau Public dashboards, Flourish charts, public Datawrapper charts, most iframe-embed-enabled tools.
Before choosing a tool, test whether your target site allows embedding. The quickest test: try loading it in a basic HTML iframe. If it does not load there, it will not load in any PowerPoint add-in either.
If your organization blocks the Office Store
This is a common scenario in enterprise Microsoft 365 environments. Admins can restrict which add-ins are available through the Microsoft 365 admin center. In that case, your options without IT involvement are limited to the screenshot + hyperlink approach.
